Understanding Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. They can cause severe pain and other symptoms when they pass through the urinary tract. Kidney stones vary in size and type, and their presence can lead to complications if not treated properly.

Symptoms

  • Severe pain in the side and back, under the ribs
  • Pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin
  • Pain when urinating
  • Pink, red, or brown urine
  • Cloudy or smelly urine
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Persistent urge to urinate
  • Fever and chills if there is an infection
*If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to seek immediate medical attention.

How do we diagnose kidney stones?

Healthcare providers use a variety of diagnostic methods, including imaging, blood and urine tests, to identify kidney stones. If we suspect the presence of a kidney stone based on your symptoms and physical exam, you may need to perform one or more of the following tests:
Urine test: This test checks for blood, crystals that form stones, and signs of infection in the urine.
Images: Techniques such as x-rays, CT (CT) and ultrasound allow us to see the size, shape, location and number of kidney stones.
Blood tests: These tests evaluate kidney function, detect infections, and identify high levels of calcium or other substances that could contribute to stone formation.

Treatment options for kidney stones

Medication

If you have a kidney stone that is likely to pass on its own and isn't causing an infection, your healthcare provider may prescribe or recommend medications to help. These medications can relax your ureter to make it easier for stones to pass through, such as tamsulosin (Flomax®) and nifedipine (Adalat® or Procardia®). They can also help control nausea, vomiting, and pain, which can be severe even with small stones.

Your provider may suggest prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications for pain relief, but it's important to consult your provider before taking ibuprofen, as it may increase the risk of kidney failure during an acute kidney stone attack, especially if you have other health conditions.

Surgical Intervention

If you have a kidney stone that can't pass on its own or is obstructing your urinary tract, we'll recommend a procedure to break up and/or remove the stone.

The type of procedure depends on several factors, including the size and location of the calculation. Procedures for kidney stones include shock wave lithotripsy, where shock waves break stones into smaller pieces that can pass more easily through the urinary tract.

Ureteroscopy: which involves inserting an endoscope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter to break down and remove the stone.

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy: a procedure for stones that cannot be treated with other methods, which involves inserting a tube directly into the kidney through a small incision in the back to break up and remove the stones with an ultrasound probe.

Laparoscopic surgery: where a small incision is made to remove calculus. Open surgery is considered a rare but sometimes necessary alternative.
